COB vs SMD LED Displays: An Engineering Comparison

COB and SMD describe different ways of assembling the LEDs that create an image. Buyers often compare them as if one is automatically superior. The useful comparison is more specific: what package and surface structure are being supplied, how that exact module can be serviced and what has been tested at the project conditions.

Quick answer: COB versus SMD

SMD uses packaged devices mounted onto the printed circuit board. COB bonds LED chips onto the board before applying an appropriate protective or optical system. These routes can lead to different surface and manufacturing characteristics, but complete screen performance cannot be inferred from packaging alone.

Pixel pitch and viewing conditions

Both package routes can be used at different pitches and densities, subject to their current designs. Pitch should be chosen around actual viewing conditions, required resolution and project geometry rather than the package label alone. Assess glare, surface reflections and ambient-light conditions in addition to nominal pitch.

Surface protection, touch and cleaning

Some COB constructions present a more continuous protected surface, which can be useful in touch-prone or accessible installations. That does not justify claiming every COB product is waterproof, impact-proof or easier to disinfect. Request the actual ingress, impact and cleaning requirements for the supplied assembly.

Repairability and damaged pixels

The repair process is a product-level decision. Depending on the technology and service policy, pixel-level procedures may differ from replacement of a module or a defined repair unit. Ask the manufacturer for acceptance criteria, spare module policy, location of repairs and a demonstration of the relevant procedure.

Brightness, color uniformity and black appearance

Optical treatment, LED binning, black materials, calibration and driving all influence perceived contrast and uniformity. A package route may enable specific implementations but does not guarantee numerical performance. Comparable measurements should state the display configuration and testing method.

Budget, yield and service economics

Upfront price can reflect packaging throughput, inspection, repair methods and market maturity. Total cost also includes access, replacement downtime, power, content system and environmental suitability. Use a project-specific comparison rather than an unsupported generic percentage.

Product examples: Jade COB and DC Series

Jade is the relevant COB product family. DC is a useful counterpart because individual DC configurations differ; some documented models use SMD while a DC0.9 configuration uses IMD-09. Do not label the complete DC Series as universally SMD. Compare the exact model datasheet and current quotation.

Frequently Asked Questions

No. Suitability depends on the configuration and the environmental, optical and maintenance requirements.

First-party product comparison: Jade COB and DC configurations

Jade COB is all flip-chip at current P0.625–P1.875 mass-produced pitches.DC has different packaging routes: SMD at P1.25–P1.875, IMD at P0.9 and selected MIP models including P0.78, P0.93 and P1.25. Some DC options add GOB protection.A fair COB-versus-SMD comparison uses a specific DC SMD model; do not use an IMD or MIP DC model as though it were SMD.

Field service and product selection

JYVISIONS normally recommends factory repair for dead-pixel problems on Jade COB and DC displays. Qualified customer technicians may perform an approved repair with the right training and tooling. Do not promise effortless field replacement, universal repairability or measured shock-resistance improvements without test data.
