LED Packaging Technologies: SMD, COB, IMD and MIP Explained

LED packaging determines how light-emitting chips are incorporated into the components and modules that make up an LED display. SMD, COB, IMD and MIP are often grouped together in specifications, but they do not describe identical manufacturing structures. GOB adds another layer of terminology: it is a protective treatment rather than a direct replacement for these packaging routes.

The right technology depends on pixel pitch, visual consistency, surface protection, service approach, production process and project cost. This guide separates the terms and shows how JYVISIONS applies different manufacturing routes across its Jade COB and DC display families.

What Is LED Packaging, and Why Does It Matter?

An LED chip is the semiconductor light-emitting element. Packaging creates a usable LED component or integrates the chip into a protected assembly. The PCB provides electrical connections and mechanical support; the LED module combines chips or packaged devices with drivers, interconnects and other circuitry. A cabinet houses one or more modules as part of the finished display system.

A manufacturing method should not be judged by its name alone. Package layout, pixel design, protective material, driver configuration and calibration together affect the resulting visual performance and the repair procedure. Different product configurations at the same pixel pitch may use different packaging routes.

SMD LED Packaging: Separate Packaged Devices on the PCB

Surface-Mounted Device (SMD) LED displays place individually packaged LED components onto a printed circuit board through automated SMT assembly.

The components may combine red, green and blue emitters within a defined package. SMD technology remains widely used across indoor and outdoor displays because it supports a broad set of configurations and established production and maintenance practices.

Within the JYVISIONS DC family, current SMD configurations include P1.25 through P1.875. Selected versions use an additional GOB protective layer. The exact package, viewing conditions and service strategy should be checked for the specified module rather than generalized to every DC display.

COB and Flip-Chip: Chips Integrated on the Substrate

Chip on Board (COB) integrates LED chips directly with the substrate before applying a protective encapsulation process. Flip-chip COB places the electrical contacts on the underside of the chip, removing the conventional wire bonds used in some other chip-mounting structures. This changes the physical assembly and interconnection route, but it does not make every performance outcome identical across products.

JYVISIONS Jade COB currently covers mass-produced pixel pitches from P0.625 to P1.875, and the entire Jade COB range uses flip-chip architecture. Depending on configuration, common-cathode and common-anode power architectures are available. Jade displays receive factory brightness and chromaticity calibration. Factory repair is normally recommended for dead-pixel faults; qualified technicians may carry out approved repairs under suitable conditions.

IMD: Integrated Multi-Pixel Devices

Integrated Matrix Device (IMD) packaging groups multiple LED pixel elements into a packaged device that is subsequently mounted onto the display module. It creates an intermediate design route between separate SMD packages and direct-on-board integration. The exact number and layout of pixels within a package depend on the IMD device used.

JYVISIONS offers a DC P0.9 configuration using IMD. That does not mean every DC display at a similar pixel pitch uses IMD: MIP configurations are also available in the wider DC technology portfolio.

MIP: Packaged Miniature LEDs Assembled by SMT

Micro LED in Package (MIP) describes a route in which very small LED chips are packaged as devices before those devices are mounted onto display PCBs. MIP should not be treated as identical to COB, and the term alone does not prove a specific pixel size, chip process or performance level.

For JYVISIONS MIP production, specialist suppliers such as NationStar and Jingtai provide pre-packaged MIP components. JYVISIONS designs its own PCB circuits, uses in-house SMT equipment including Panasonic NPM placement machines, assembles the modules and screens, and performs factory calibration. This is in-house PCB, SMT and display manufacturing—not in-house encapsulation of the MIP LED components.

JYVISIONS can manufacture indoor MIP displays across P0.78–P1.8, with P0.78, P0.93 and P1.25 among the main indoor configurations. The outdoor MIP production range is P1.25–P1.95. Final order availability and configuration should be confirmed for the project.

Where Does GOB Fit?

Glue on Board (GOB) is a protective treatment applied to an already constructed LED module. It is not a peer packaging category alongside SMD, COB, IMD and MIP. For example, a DC display can use an SMD structure and also receive GOB protection. The coating, repair procedures and front-surface characteristics must be evaluated for that specific version.

How to Compare LED Packaging Technologies

Start with the viewing environment, required pixel pitch, exposure to touch or impact, service access and expected image consistency. Do not choose a package only from a headline ranking. Ask what the particular configuration can deliver, how it is factory-calibrated, and how the supplier repairs or replaces a damaged module.

  • SMD: individually packaged SMT devices; established broad range of application choices.
  • COB: chips integrated at substrate level with protective encapsulation; check repair workflow.
  • IMD: a packaged multi-pixel device; confirm package layout and module integration.
  • MIP: packaged small LED devices then SMT mounted; distinguish upstream packaging and in-house module manufacturing.
  • GOB: optional protection over an underlying package/module construction, not a separate chip packaging route.

What to Share for a Technical Recommendation

A useful packaging recommendation requires more than a target pitch. Share the intended use, installation location, desired screen size, approximate viewing distance, level of public contact, operating hours, maintenance access and any special image-consistency requirements. The engineering team can then identify practical package and protection options for the display.

Frequently Asked Questions

No. COB is a chip integration and encapsulation approach; GOB is an additional protective treatment that can be applied to an existing display module, including selected SMD designs. They should not appear as equivalent chip packaging types.
No. Current DC routes include SMD at P1.25–P1.875, IMD at P0.9, and selected MIP designs such as P0.78, P0.93 and P1.25. The exact manufacturing route depends on the configuration.
JYVISIONS sources packaged MIP components from specialized LED suppliers and carries out its own PCB design, SMT mounting, module assembly and display calibration. This is different from manufacturing the upstream MIP packages.
Repair depends on the specific package, protective layer, fault and tools. JYVISIONS generally recommends factory service for Jade COB dead-pixel faults; approved, experienced technicians may be able to perform appropriate local repairs.
